Sujata Achrekar

Contemporary artist Sujata Achrekar studied art at the L.S Raheja School of Art before pursuing a Diploma in Art Education at the J.J School of Art in Mumbai. Her paintings, which are figurative in style, often portray Sanskrit verses in Devanagari letters. Hindu philosophy and mythology are the prominent themes in her paintings and she is renowned for her symbolic representation of priests against the backdrop of pilgrimage sites. Sujata’s employs several inventive techniques in her artwork, including scratching, overlapping, scrubbing, rolling, and writing, in addition to her primary use of acrylic paints. Her work has been exhibited in India and abroad, and she has garnered several accolades, including the Maharashtra Government State Award for Portraiture in 1990 and 1992, the Bombay Art Society Award in 1995 and the NGMA Women Artist Camp award in 2005.
